Introduction
Turbidity monitoring of filter potable water provides an excellent indicator of water
clarity as well as a reliable measure of general
filter efficiency. Recent studies, however, indicate that particle count data can provide
additional information concerning filter
operation, and often can provide an early warning of filter breakthrough before turbidity
values begin to rise. Real-time particle
count data can indicate breakthrough of particles in the Cryptosporidium ( 5-7 micron ) or
Giardia ( 9-11 micron ) size ranges
before any change in turbidity can be detected.
On-line particle measurement can be an extremely valuable operating tool for any water
plant striving
to meet increasing stringent surface water treatment regulations. The response of
treatment
processes to changes in chemical addition can be measured with high sensitivity helping to
optimize
suspended solids removal. Filter backwash operations can be monitored to insure that
particle counts
have declined to low levels before the filter effluent is allowed into the distribution
system. Log
removals can be easily monitored on individual filters and recorded to document system
operation.
These and other benefits of particle monitoring can easily be incorporated into any water
treatment
monitoring system.
Particle Measurement - WaterTrack 2000
The L & H WaterTrack 2000 water particle sensor is designed to provide valuable
particle data by
continuously monitoring particle counts in raw water, filter influent, or filter effluent.
Based on a
laser light blocking principle this sensor will provide particle count data over the size
ranges from
2 to 200 microns, with three 4-20 mA analog outputs, and an RS232/RS485 digital output
supplied
as standard. The three 4-20 mA outputs are scaled for a range of 0-1000 counts per
milliliter, with
one channel proportional to particles in the range of 4 to 8 micron, and one channel
proportional to
particles in the range of 8-12 microns. The digital output provides actual particle counts
for sizes 2
and above, 4 and above, 8 and above, and 12 and above. This data can be manipulated on an
Excel
spread sheet for calculations of filter removal efficiencies as well as trending of
Particle data.
Particle sensors require relatively little maintenance or adjustment. Sensors are
factory calibrated
and do not require field adjustment. The only requirement is that the sample flow be
maintained at
60 cc/min. This can be accomplished conveniently using a constant head flow control
supplied as
part of the sensor assembly. The flow control also serves as a degassing chamber to
remove
entrained air that can cause inaccurate particle measurements.
A unique feature of the water sensor is an easily removable flow cell. Since deposits
on optical
surfaces can degrade a particle sensors performance over time, the cell can be
easily removed
for cleaning. All cells are interchangeable where a spare can be inserted in seconds so
that
monitoring can continue while the cell is cleaned at your convenience.
Optional Display Package
The particle sensors operate from a 12 - 18 VDC
power supply, which may be purchased from
L & H Environmental, Inc or supplied by the user. If displays are desired for the
analog outputs,
a display package can be supplied which contains one, two, or three individual LED
displays.
This display package also contains a 12 VDC power supply to provide power for both the
particle
sensor and the display modules. Alternately, this display package can provide power for
both the
particle sensor and the display functions for three separate particle sensors, using one
display
channel for each sensor.
WaterTrack Light Software Particle Analysis System

The WaterTrack Light software package is
a fully functional SCADA system capable of
monitoring up to 32 address locations. The
LHLINK driver can send data to Wonderware,
Labview, Lookout and Excel without additional
programming or computer knowledge. The
logging software of WaterTrack is Microsoft
based designed by former Microsoft engineers.
Particle counts, flow rate, and sensor calibration
are shown real time on tab selectable charts,
graphs and live displays.
WaterTrack SCADA software package is a
fully functional SCADA system capable of
monitoring up to 4080 locations with up the 13 data inputs at
each location. The data acquisition boards are
plug and play for pressure sensors, turbidity,
flow rate, backwash alarms and many other
user inputs.
Unique features of the WaterTrack software is its ability to communicate real
time
with our SensorWatch.com data web site. Data from the customer's site is
accessible to management at a secure ISP and critical process information is sent
to a pager network when alarm limits are reached. Our Customers are provided
with a wireless computer solution that allows management to advise technicians
from a remote location 24 hours a day.
WaterTrack Laser Particle Sensor
The Model WT2000 is a laser-based particle counting sensor designed to measure
and size particles entrained in a flowing water sample. Its primary applications are
the measurement of total particles above a certain size in water samples coming
from either gravity or pressure filters. WaterTrack sensors provide three channels
of particle data in a 4-20 mA analog output format. The 4-20 mA output is easily
selectable from 0 200 counts per milliliter up to 0-10,000 counts per
milliliter.
The sensor can communicate to a SCADA system via RS232 and RS485. Flow rate,
eight channels of particle data,, turbidity, backwash, pressure and sensor
calibration are displayed and logged in real-time with the WaterTrack Software.
